7,000 troops deployed in France after school stabbing

France sends 7,000 troops in response to tragic school stabbing

In response to a recent school attack where a teacher was fatally stabbed and three others wounded by a former student with suspected ties to Islamic radicalization, France is increasing security by mobilizing up to 7,000 soldiers across the country. The attacker had been under surveillance by intelligence services for radicalization. While the motive remains unclear, the suspect repeatedly shouted "Allahu akbar" during the attack. Counterterrorism authorities are conducting an investigation, and the attacker, along with several others, is in custody.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Gambetta-Carnot school in Arras, where the incident occurred, has reopened. Some students, parents, and staff returned to the school to seek support and reconnect. Classes were canceled, but the reopening allowed the community to come together. One mother brought her daughter as a show of defiance against extremism, while another sought guidance from counselors to support her sons who witnessed the attack.

Echoes of past incidents

The attack has stirred memories of a similar incident that occurred three years ago when teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded by a radicalized Chechen near his school in the Paris area. The recent suspect was under surveillance since the summer for suspected Islamic radicalization.

Security heightened and link to middle east conflict

French intelligence services have noted a connection between the recent attack and the conflict in the Middle East. Authorities have detained 12 individuals near schools and places of worship since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated, with some found to be armed and planning actions. France has also increased security at numerous Jewish sites across the country. Charges of terrorism-related murder and attempted murder are being considered against the suspect.
